Quality Assurance for Scan-to-BIM Models

Your safeguard for reliable BIM models

We verify Scan-to-BIM models against the original point cloud to identify geometric deviations, missing elements, and inconsistencies before delivery.

Our in-house developed QA process combines automated model-to-point-cloud comparison with professional review by our BIM specialists – providing a transparent and reliable basis for model quality.

What is Scan-to-BIM Quality Assurance by Miviso?

A BIM model may look accurate at first glance while still containing deviations from the actual building geometry. Walls can be slightly offset, roof surfaces may not align with the point cloud, or individual elements may be missing.

Traditional visual reviews and spot checks can identify many issues, but they do not systematically assess the entire model.

Our digital quality assurance process compares the BIM model with the underlying point cloud and highlights potential deviations and inconsistencies. The identified areas are then reviewed by our BIM specialists and documented before the model is approved or delivered.

This provides a more systematic and transparent approach to quality control in Scan-to-BIM projects.

Our Services

We provide independent quality assurance for Scan-to-BIM models based on the corresponding point cloud data.

The model and point cloud are prepared and aligned for comparison. Our QA process then identifies areas where the modeled geometry differs from the scanned building condition or where potential modeling issues require closer review.

The results are validated by our BIM specialists and documented in a clear QA report. Identified issues can be created and managed directly within the dashboard, allowing our team and the client to review findings, communicate changes, and refine the model in a structured workflow.

Scan-to-BIM Quality Assurance: Scope of Services

  • Comparison of BIM model geometry against point cloud data

  • Detection of geometric deviations and misaligned components

  • Identification of potentially missing or inconsistent elements

  • Review of flagged areas by experienced BIM specialists

  • Verification according to defined project requirements and tolerances

  • Documentation of findings in a structured QA report

  • Optional correction of identified modeling issues

  • Issue management and client communication directly within the QA dashboard

"We wanted a better way to answer a simple question before delivering a model: Does it actually match the scanned building? That was the starting point for developing our own QA process.”

Want to verify your BIM model against your point cloud?

Let us check your Scan-to-BIM model before it becomes the basis for further planning.

Your Added Value

More confidence in your Scan-to-BIM data

Small modeling deviations are not always visible during a conventional model review. However, they can become relevant later when the BIM model is used as a basis for design, coordination, renovation, or construction planning.

By systematically comparing the BIM model with the point cloud, potential issues can be identified before handover and corrected where necessary.

  • More systematic quality control than visual spot checks alone

  • Early identification of geometric deviations

  • Fewer avoidable correction and revision loops

  • Greater reliability of BIM models as a planning basis

  • Transparent documentation of identified issues

  • Clearly defined and repeatable QA process

Practical example

A modeled wall, beam, or roof surface may appear correct in the BIM model but be slightly offset from its actual position in the point cloud. Our QA process helps identify such discrepancies before they affect subsequent planning or coordination.

Why Automated Comparison + Professional Review?

Automated comparison makes it possible to analyze BIM geometry against point cloud data more systematically and efficiently than through visual inspection alone.

However, not every detected deviation represents a modeling error. Point cloud noise, occlusions, tolerances, and project-specific modeling requirements need to be taken into account.

For this reason, our QA process combines automated detection with professional assessment by experienced BIM specialists. This allows us to distinguish relevant modeling issues from deviations that are acceptable within the defined project requirements.

Quality you can see

Our quality assurance does not end with an internal model check. The results are documented in a structured report, making identified deviations and quality issues transparent and traceable.

This gives you a clear overview of the model quality before the BIM data is used for further planning.

FAQs

Here we answer frequently asked questions about our Quality and Assurance services.

Can you check BIM models created by other companies?
Yes. If the corresponding point cloud and BIM model are available, we can perform an independent quality check based on the defined project requirements.

What does the quality check identify?
The process helps identify geometric deviations, misaligned components, potentially missing elements, and other inconsistencies between the BIM model and the point cloud.

Is the quality check fully automated?
No. Automated comparison is used to efficiently identify potential deviations. The results are subsequently reviewed by our BIM specialists to assess their relevance according to the point cloud, project requirements, and defined tolerances.

Does every deviation mean that the BIM model is incorrect?
No. Point clouds contain noise, occlusions, and measurement-related variations, and BIM models are created according to defined modeling rules and tolerances. Identified deviations therefore need to be assessed in the context of the project requirements.

Do I receive a quality report?
Yes. The findings are documented in a structured QA report, providing a transparent overview of identified issues and model quality.

Can you also correct the identified issues?
Depending on the project scope, identified modeling issues can also be corrected before final delivery.
